Investment Accounting Specialist

Position Summary

Kansas State University Foundation is seeking an experienced Investment Accounting Specialist. The Investment Accounting Specialist is a key member of the Accounting team. This position provides specific support to the Accounting Department and the Investment Management Team, while working closely with the Shared Services Accounting Manager, controller, chief finance officer and investments staff. The Investment Accounting Specialist performs analysis, accounting and other activities for public and private investments held by the KSU Foundation. This Specialist role is accounting at its core with a strong finance focus. The Specialist will not only analyze and enter Investment Accounting transactions, but will also reconcile custodian and manager reports, accept and record stock and other investment gifts, and establish new systems to streamline and enhance the business.

Core Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Analyze and record all trades and other activities for public and private investments. Follow up with managers’ accounting staff if discrepancies are noted.
  2. Responsible for gifted securities process, making sure the Gifted Securities Policy is followed and creating gift packets for gift processing, applying a high degree of organizational and interpersonal sensitivity.
  3. Reconcile investment reports issued by custodian and individual managers to investment accounting system; audit data to correct any discrepancies.
  4. Export data from investment accounting system and restructure to import into general ledger system; reconcile both systems. 
  5. Work in partnership with accounting staff to ensure organization’s total cash holdings remain balanced.
  6. Prepare quarterly Investments book. Prepare documents for annual audit. 
  7. Manage operation and maintenance of investment accounting system; develop and implement processes to enhance work flow, resolve inconsistencies and incorporate program enhancements on ongoing basis.
  8. Work with Investment Staff to execute monthly and quarterly performance reporting process.
  9. Develop and implement processes to enhance work flow and resolve inconsistencies.


  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of three years of investment accounting experience.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures, computerized accounting software and financial statement preparation preferred.
  • Ability to hold confidentiality and be trustworthy is required.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, analytical prowess and problem solving skills. Must exhibit professional curiosity and the drive to find root cause and solutions.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Excel including V look-up, pivot tables, and other advanced spreadsheet tools and applications.
  • Adept and capable of quickly learning and proficiently operating investment management software
  • Must have proficiency in Microsoft Access, Microsoft Word, and various other software and computer applications. 


  • No travel required.

Physical Demands:               

  • Work is primarily sedentary. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. May require occasional physical exertion such as long periods of sitting or standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.

Desired Skills & Experience:                                   

  • Experience with Investran preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills. 
  • Ability to work under time constraints and meet deadlines.
