Director of Development- Universitywide

Position Summary

The Director of Development, Universitywide provides the overall guidance and management of the Universitywide fundraising team. She/he is responsible for qualifying prospects and collaborating with colleagues to solicit and close major gifts. As a development leader at the Foundation, the Director will be highly collaborative and committed to the sustained success and growth of the organization.

This position requires extensive public contact with high-level alumni, donors and volunteers. Travel is required.

Core Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Lead the day to day planning and administration of the Universitywide fundraising team and drive fundraising activity related to gift acquisition and portfolio management.
  2. Manage a portfolio and make qualification calls/visits, cultivate, and solicit with an emphasis on qualifying major gift prospects to partner with collegiate development teams.
  3. Develop and implement both annual and long-range goals, objectives and strategies to qualify and refer prospects leading to closing major gifts.
  4. Manage staff, including recruitment, retention, performance management, coaching and development. Provide supervision and work direction for gift officers. Partner with KSUF resources to facilitate professional development of staff to feed the talent pipeline.
  5. Create and maintain an effective working report with other development staff. Guide strategic development related activities in coordination and collaboration with the collegiate development teams.
  6. Utilizing a variety of foundation resources, provide regular individual and team progress reports on gift officer and unit performance. Ensure the completion of all contacts/proposals of team in a timely manner.
  7. Partner with prospects analytics and research, principal gift workgroup and campaign operations to identify new donor opportunities, analyze team performance, implement effective practices and coordinate donor/campaign engagement for college/unit prospects.


  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years professional transferrable experience in positions that were metrics-focused, required measurable output and relationship building or in a fundraising environment. 
  • A minimum of 3-5 years development experience in a non-profit, higher education or similar fundraising organization with progressive fund raising production strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and developing productive relationships with corporations and private foundations.
  • Experience with building cross-functional, interdisciplinary and/or intra-institutional partnerships.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with a diverse donor base, university leadership partners, foundation leadership and peers through verbal and written means.
  • Customer centric approach with the ability to listen and translate the needs of the donor into action for the college unit.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license with an acceptable driving record required.


  • Significant travel required.

Physical Demands:               

  • Work is primarily sedentary. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. May require occasional physical exertion such as long periods of sitting or standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.
